On behalf of Plankton lab / School of Biological Sciences – USM, staff and students, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Plankton lab website. I hope you will take the time to browse through the website and discover new insights about Plankton lab and its mission that will convince you that your future research goals will be achieved at this lab. During the last period of time, Plankton lab has achieved great progress in the ecological studies of algae, especially on the uses of microalgae as bioindicator to infer water quality characteristics. Algal bioassay to study the phytochemical and nutritional values of microalgae, and the biological activity of microalgae for bioremediation of environmental pollutants are still in progress. We are proud of these remarkable accomplishments and others that have been realized during this period of time.We live in a fast-changing, vastly-challenging world. Our firm conviction, however, is that Plankton lab will live up to the challenge. Where there is a will, there is a way. We have great faith in our lab, as well as the precious human resources that it has.

Research profile :

Research is focused on the use of algae, especially diatom to infer water quality characteristics. Algae can serve as an indicator of the water quality deterioration degree, and many algal indicators and indices have been used to assess environmental status. Diatom-based biomonitoring and laboratory bioassays may prove to be effective tools to characterize the environmental status in which the algae exist, and to detect environmental changes. Research on phytochemical and biological activity evaluation of microalgae is also being carried out. Microalgae provide a rich source of novel genetic material enabling the production of a variety of valuable nutritional and pharmaceutical.
